Malama Beach (Skoutarospilioi) Guide: Snorkeling & Turtles in Kapparis
If you are staying at Mythical Sands Resort, you are just a 550-meter stroll away from one of Cyprus’s most enchanting coastal escapes: Malama Beach. While the crowds often swarm the shores of Fig Tree Bay, locals and savvy travelers retreat to Malama for its turquoise waters, sheltered cove, and thriving marine life.
Officially known as Skoutarospilioi Beach, this bay is more than just a place to swim—it is a sanctuary for nature and a site steeped in local legend. Below is everything you need to know about visiting this hidden gem from your home base at Mythical Sands.
Why Malama Beach is Truly Special
Unlike the larger, wind-swept beaches of Protaras, Malama is a naturally sheltered bay flanked by limestone cliffs. This geographical shape creates a “pool-like” environment where the water remains calm and flat, even on breezy days. This makes it a 5-star destination for families with young children or anyone seeking a peaceful, meditative swim.
The Legend of Skoutarospilioi (Shield Caves)
The name Skoutarospilioi translates from Greek to “Shield Caves.” According to local folklore, the small caves lining the bay were once used by warriors as a strategic shelter. They would hide their ships and shields within these rocky alcoves to remain invisible from the sea. Today, these same caves offer a stunning backdrop for photography and a cool place to rest out of the sun.
Snorkeling: Where to Find the Turtles
Malama is famous for its exceptional underwater visibility. It is one of the few places in the Famagusta district where you are almost guaranteed a marine encounter. Here is how to find the local residents:
- The Golden Hour: Turtles are most active between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM before the bay gets busy.
- Follow the Seagrass: Look for the dark patches on the seafloor about 20 meters out; this is where the turtles feed.
- Be Respectful: Always keep a 3-meter distance and never swim directly over them so they can surface for air.
- The West Cliffs (Right Side): Follow the rocky headland towards the west. The seagrass beds here are the “underwater cafeteria” for the resident Green Sea Turtles.
- The Sea Caves (Left Side): Explore the three cliff caves on the left. These are shallow enough for amateur snorkelers to swim into. Local Tip: Wear water shoes, as the seabed near the caves is pebbled and can be slippery.
Dining & Sunset Cocktails: From Breakfast to Dinner
You don’t need to leave the beach to find world-class dining. Malama offers a sophisticated beach bar scene that rivals the best in Europe:
- Kalifi Beach Bar: A local favorite open all year. We recommend their Cyprus Breakfast (with halloumi and lountza) or their fresh grilled fish for lunch. As the sun sets, try their signature Frozen Margarita.
Water Sports: Adrenaline in the Cove
For those who want more than just sunbathing, KapparisWaterFun operates on the outskirts of the bay. They offer a range of activities that take advantage of the calm water:
- Paddleboarding (SUP): The calm water is perfect for beginners. Paddle out to the caves for the best photos.
- Boat Hire: Rent a self drive boat (no license required for some models) to explore the coast.
- Thrills: Try the “Crazy Sofa” or Jet Skis for a faster pace across the bay.
Getting There: A 10-Minute Walk from Mythical Sands
One of the biggest perks of staying at Mythical Sands Resort is the proximity to this beach. You don’t need to worry about the limited parking at Malama!
- Exit Mythical Sands via the main entrance.
- Head east toward the coastline (simply follow the “Malama” signs).
- It is a flat, easy 550-meter walk that takes approximately 7–10 minutes.
The Early Bird Secret: In July and August, the municipal sunbeds fill up by 10:00 AM. We recommend arriving at 8:00 AM. The water is at its clearest, the air is cool, and you’ll likely have the turtles all to yourself.
